ASSIGNMENT TWO
Semester 2, 2018
ITPG8.250 Data Analytics and Visualisation
Weighting: 50% of final grade
Length: Refer to the assessment detail
Due Date: 6
th December 2018 through Tunitin
Time: 5:00pm
INSTRUCTIONS:
In your first assessment you were requested to investigate various data sources. This data existed in various
forms from CSV to actual data with a database. As part of this data acquisition you were expected to analyse
this data in terms of its variety, volume, velocity and validity, etc. This analysis would have lead you to one or
more data products and potential visualisations. The potential data product would have resulted in identifying
a business reporting gap or need.
In this assessment you will be using your existing data sources* to develop a data product to fulfil one or more
of these gaps.
*Alternative data source: In the event you determined the data from the first assessment was inconclusive,
too small a sample or unsuitable as a data product you are free to identify an alternative source of data that
WILL lead to a potential data products and suitable visualisations. As part of you documentation submission
you will be required to comment on this alternative source of data and give a rationale for the decision to go
with the alternative data source.
DELIVERABLES:
There will be three deliverables for this assessment as described below:
1. Visualisation Product
The purpose of this deliverable will be to take the data you have previously acquired, examined and
analysed and to use it to prepare some form of visualisation.
Your visualisation can be something as straight forward as an infographic or interactive and
engaging using PowerBI/R.
The visualisation MUST only use the data from your first assessment or the alternative data
source as indicated above.
Ideas and examples of the data products you could create are shown here: 15 Cool Information
Graphics and Data Viz from 2016 - http://blog.visme.co/best-information-graphics-2016/

In addition to the actual visualisation that you will submit you will also need to include a manual which
will include;
instructions on how to use it
instructions for the software required to show the visualisation
the data used in the visualisation
2. Poster
To support your visualisation you are to create an electronic poster suitable for printing (printing of
this poster will not be required) on A1 (594 x 841mm). The purpose of this poster is to describe your
data, the context of its use and to showcase your data product and illustrate how it fulfils your
reporting gap/aim.
The poster should be between 1000-2000 words with references and should cover the following sub topics:
Data source (or alternative) and the rationale for the selecting and identifying said data
source.
Comment and rationale on the visualisation choices.
Technical specifications, design and relevant research issues for the visualisation.
How the data was able to lead to a Data product.
Potential future research, application and impacts.
3. Presentation
You will be required to present your final visualisation in the form of a 5 minute presentation.
The presentation should also include
a brief introduction to your case study
the visualisation and the benefits of said visualisation.
This session will include a question and answer session. All students are required to participate in this
session by giving feedback and asking questions of your peers about their presentation.

Marking Rubric Guide
This rubric is my guide for marking, and you should use it as a guide as to my expectations. It contains the main
criteria that I will be considering as I mark your work. You do not have to meet all of these criteria to fall into a
grade range. The amount to which a criterion is present (for example, how many good sources did you use?), and
other considerations will be taken into account – this rubric is provided only a guide to expectations.
Therefore it is not appropriate to use this as a strict classification – e.g. “My report does everything you say in the
‘B’ column therefore I should be a ‘B’” – instead it is more helpful to ask why you received the grade you did.
A
(80-100%)
B
(65 – 79%)
C
(50 – 64%)
D/E
(0 – 49%)
