ubuntu 釋出的linux 裡面有一個非常具有迷惑性的版本-desktop 。因為有一套server ，所以desktop 很容易從字面上被理解成桌面版。而這樣理解的人通常會弄不明白剩下那個alternate 是什麼東西。

其實desktop 是Live CD 的名字，也就是刻錄在光碟上執行的Linux 。是一套已經裝好的系統。把它燒錄到光碟上放進光碟機就可以直接執行這套完整的linux 。當然你也可以在執行之後把它“ 安裝” 到硬碟上，而這樣的安裝更像是一種拷貝或者還原，類似ghost 。 真正意義上正統的安裝版本則是alternate ，它是由許多deb 包組成的。可以詳細的制定安裝內容。是正宗的硬碟安裝般。

這兩個版本還有一些速度上的區別。 因為類似系統還原，desktop 的安裝速度較快。而alternate 正式的安裝相比之下會慢一些。 而執行的時候恰好相反：desktop 因為是既成的，可能會缺少對應軟體環境的適應性，所以和靈活指定及安裝的alternate 相比會慢一些。The alternate install CD allows you to perform certain specialist installations of Ubuntu. It provides for the following situations:

creating pre-configured OEM systems; setting up automated deployments; upgrading from older installations without network access; LVM and/or RAID partitioning; installing GRUB to a location other than the Master Boot Record; installs on systems with less than about 192MB of RAM.

desktopCD 安裝前可以看到基本介面和試用(liveCD 功能), alternate 面向安裝個性化需求更大的更專業一點點的使用者. desktop 和alternate 都有基本的軟體包, 要更多的軟體包只要修改合適的源下載也是很快的.desktop 是一個live cd , 只用於桌面系統，也可以在LiveCD 狀態下安裝。 alternate 是標準的安裝CD 。包含了一些桌面程式，可以用高階安裝模式安裝，在安裝時可以劃分分割槽。也可以當作Server 來用，不過一些 Server 程式要自己通過網路來安裝Alternate 安裝過程會有高階分割槽以及grub 安裝選項,Desktop 沒有.alternate 既能安裝desktop 也能安裝server desktop 是一個live cd 在桌面環境裡面 以嚮導的方式引導安裝live CD 就是把安裝好的軟體放到光碟中， 安裝時就把其上的內容複製到硬碟再簡單配置就行了。

DVD 內包含 Desktop / Alternate 兩種安裝模式，不過少了三個專案，分別是記憶體測試/ 救援模式/ 硬碟開機。 同樣有兩種平臺可供選擇：

PS ：Ubuntu 根據使用桌面環境的不同，還分為Ubuntu （採用Gnome 桌面環境，介面比較簡潔、使用者最多）、Kubuntu （採用KDE 桌面環境，介面比較華麗、有些軟體特別優秀）和Xubuntu （採用Xfce 桌面環境，比較小巧、速度較快），大家可以分別到“Gnome 桌面環境” 、 “KDE 桌面環境” 、“XFCE 桌面環境” 瞭解一下各個桌面環境的特點再選擇。
