MY TRANSFORMATION FROM a TREKKER TO MOUNTAINEER

The Basic Mountaineering Course has made from a Trekker to a Mountaineer. The importance of fall in, time keeping and discipline were made aware by the instructors, which were practiced throughout the course. An introduction to different types of ropes and knots, were given which are the lifeline of every Mountaineer. Training started with full force with intense PT at 6am We were taken to the rock field and exposed to the principles of rock craft over the week The techniques which form the foundation of rock craft and the importance of safety were instilled in us. We were given exposure to negotiate artificial obstacles in the campus which are constructed to simulate the real obstacles a Mountaineer would confront in the field. Finally an end to rock craft came with practical test for us on the rocks. Through these days, to prepare us for the hills, the morning PT was replaced by short treks with loaded ruck sacks. We trekked along the quaint villages, lush green apple orchards. We trekked for acclimatization to the Thatch at a height of 10,440 ft below Patalsu peak. On this day the students have practically applied their learning of “Climb High Sleep Low” principle of acclimatization. We were familiarised about the mountain peaks and the wildlife. We trekked to Sheti Dhara Base at 15,700 ft, via Beas Kund. It revealed the capacities of the individuals, the need for acclimatization and pushing the limits. Finally , it was our last day at Bhakar thach we all were nostalgic and we just wanted to be in the mountains but unfortunately we had to go back.
