Crowdsourcing a better world with Oh Caption!

You are volunteering your sight on Be My Eyes and on BeSpecular. When you get to help, it is wonderful. But, how often do you get to help? The sighted users outnumber the visually-impaired on Be My Eyes by more than 16 to 1.

Wouldn’t it be nice to be able to do something pro-active? Wouldn’t it be nice if you could just make the world a better place without waiting to be asked?

The new Oh Caption! browser plugin lets you leverage your eyesight any time you want to make social media a more complete experience for the visually-impaired.

Memes and photos and screenshots of text abound on social media. To the visually-impaired, most of that content is rendered as:

White text on a black background reading “Image Contains Text”

(except without the helpful caption).

The Oh Caption! browser plugin lets you add descriptive text to images that will be rendered by screen readers. Take a look at your Facebook feed. Think about how it would look if all of the images were replaced with sentences like “Image may contain: 1 person, outdoors and tree”

or “Image may contain text” or just “Image.” Then, think about how much better it would be if, instead, the images were replaced with sentences like “TV screenshot of Anderson Cooper in waist-deep water with CNN chyron: Flooding continues along Carolina coast” or “Meme showing Boromir speaking with text: One does not simply clean up glitter.”

You can make that difference! You can make it today! You can make all the memes and all of the screenshots of tweets and all of the photoshop mashups mean something to everyone!

Start making that difference with Oh Caption!
