This page contains binary image files that allow you to restore your Nexus or Pixel device's original factory firmware. You will find these files useful if you have used the Android Open-Source Project, flashed custom builds on your device, and wish to return that device to its factory state.

These files are for use only on your personal Nexus or Pixel devices and may not be disassembled, decompiled, reverse engineered, modified or redistributed by you or used in any way except as specifically set forth in the license terms that came with your device.

Warning: Installing this factory image will erase all data from the device. While it may be possible to restore certain data backed up to your Google Account, apps and their associated data will be uninstalled. Before proceeding, please ensure that data you would like to retain is
backed up to your Google Account
.

Downloading of the system image and use of the device software is subject to the Google Terms of Service. By continuing, you agree to the Google Terms of Service and Privacy Policy. Your downloading of the system image and use of the device software may also be subject to certain third-party terms of service, which can be found in Settings > About phone > Legal information

, or as otherwise provided.

Flashing instructions

The factory image downloaded from this page includes a script that flashes the device, typically named flash-all.sh(On Windows systems, use flash-all.bat instead).

Warning: To flash a device using one of the system images below (or one of your own), you also need the latest fastboottool. You can get it from the Android SDK Platform-Tools package, which you can download here.

Once you have the fastboot tool, add it to your PATH environment variable (the flash-all script below must be able to find it).

Also be certain that you've set up USB access for your device, as described in Run Apps on a Hardware Device.

Caution: Flashing a new system image deletes all user data. Be certain to first backup any personal data such as photos.

To flash a system image:

  1. Download the appropriate system image for your device below, then unzip it to a safe directory.

  2. Connect your device to your computer over USB.

  3. Start the device in fastboot mode with one of the following methods:

    • Using the adb tool: With the device powered on, execute:

      adb reboot bootloader
    • Using a key combo: Turn the device off, then turn it on and immediately hold down the relevant key combination for your device.

  4. If necessary, unlock the device's bootloader using one of the following methods:

    • If you are updating a Nexus or Pixel device that is manufactured in 2015 or later (for example, a Nexus 5X, Nexus 6P, Pixel, Pixel XL, Pixel 2 or Pixel 2 XL device), run this command:

      fastboot flashing unlock
Note: the 'flashing unlock' command is only available with fastboot version 23.0.1 or later. The latest available version of fastboot can be downloaded from SDK Platform Tools.
    • For Pixel 2 XL only: the critical partitions may also need to be unlocked before flashing. The unlock can be performed with this command, and should NOT be done on other devices:

      fastboot flashing unlock_critical
    • If you are updating an older device, run this command:

      fastboot oem unlock

The target device will show you a confirmation screen. (This erases all data on the target device.)

  5. Open a terminal and navigate to the unzipped system image directory.

  6. Execute the flash-all script. This script installs the necessary bootloader, baseband firmware(s), and operating system.

Once the script finishes, your device reboots. You should now lock the bootloader for security:

  1. Start the device in fastboot mode again, as described above.

  2. Execute:

    fastboot flashing lock

    or, for older devices, run:

    fastboot oem lock

Locking bootloader will wipe the data on some devices. After locking the bootloader, if you want to flash the device again, you must run fastboot oem unlock again, which will wipe the data.
