How To Do Anything In Life
Are you willing to admit that there is something you really suck at? You are terrible at it and you don’t need someone to tell you that. I know I do. I also know that I would like to do anything I want in life. Let me cut it to the chase here; I am color blind. There, I said it. That means you might see my design efforts and wish you never saw them. I really want to be able to tell all the colors apart and design killer UIs for my apps. So, I tried it this past weekend.
That being said, I opened Google Drive and started working on my android app prototype. I have seen great designs. I have read great design books. But reading books doesn’t help much if you don’t do what they say. It only helps you tell the difference between genius design work and a crappy job. The most important thing though, is that we can either learn how to do it or fool ourselves into thinking we know it when we know nothing at all. Here is my crazy design prototype that I started last weekend.
The best way to do anything in life is to start somewhere. Pick something you love – oh come on, who am I kidding, you will find out whether you love it or not after you try it. Start doing something today. At first, someone will see what you did and wish they could pull their eyes out of their sockets. Anyway, before that happens, here is the second screenshot of my android app prototype.
Perhaps I have not said this before; I run everyday after work. What does it have to do with this post? Simple, if you really want to be good at something, you practice it everyday (at least). If we had a conversation about code, it would not take you long to notice that I write code everyday – hell, even during the weekends just for fun. So, practice makes perfect – whoever said it knew his stuff. Now here is the next snapshot of my app prototype.
So far, what do you think? Remember, am not a designer – there is a good chance you are way more experienced than me. I am just trying to learn the basics. Do you hate it or like it? Your opinions will be really helpful because I like listening to other people’s views and perspectives. Anyway, in whatever you do, remember that you will really suck at it at the beginning. Before I finish, here is my final snapshot.
Final Pointers On How To Do Anything
- Let us get this out of the way; I have a long way to go as far as design is concerned. You can probably tell.
- When it comes to being great at something, it takes a significant amount of time – no matter who you are. We all wish we were great at something but when we hear the truth about how long it takes, we surrender.
- Deciding to do something and actually doing it are two totally different things. If you want to be successful at anything, decide and DO IT.
- Step in the cold waters – fear is an evil monster (by the way, have you ever heard of a good monster?). By willing to try something, no matter how scary it is, you show that you are capable of doing greater things. You don’t fear criticism. You don’t give a hoot.
- Listen to those who are smarter than you. Trust me, there are so many out there. Eventually, make the right decisions from their advice.
- Know when to stop. Sometimes, deep down, you feel like you don’t have what it takes. No one has to tell you. You know it. At this point, find something else and give it a go. One day you will be awesome. You will find your passion. You will kick some ass.
So, what are your tricks and tips on how you overcome fear of doing something in life? What approaches do you follow while learning something new? I would love to hear from you; seriously. Shoot me an email through the contact page or even the comments below this post.
Are you in the process of learning something new? Are you a designer? If so, I would love to connect with you.
In general, you are capable of doing anything you want. You just have to start doing whatever that is. Otherwise you will keep saying it until you grow grey hair.
