這是馬致遠著名的小曲，28個字勾畫出一幅羈旅荒郊圖。這支曲以斷腸人觸景生情組成。從標題上看出作者抒情的動機。馬致遠一曲小令，短短28字，意蘊深遠，結構精巧，平仄起伏，頓挫有致，音韻鏗鏘，直貫靈心。其四射的藝術魅力，傾倒古今多少文士雅客，騷人才子。曲中意味，既“深得唐人絕句妙景”(《人間詞話》)，又兼具宋詞清雋疏朗之自然，歷來被推崇為描寫自然的佳作，堪稱“秋思之祖”(《中原音韻》)。
